Ken Matthews

Ken Matthews is a consultant in water and government issues.

Ken retired as Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Australian National Water Commission in October 2010. He had held these concurrent positions since March 2005. In these roles, he was responsible for working with the State and Territory governments of Australia to implement the National Water Initiative inter-governmental agreement to improve national water management.

Mr Matthews was previously the Secretary (CEO) of the Federal Department of Transport and Regional Services from November, 1999 to October, 2004, and from February, 1998 to October 1999, was the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

During 1997, Mr Matthews headed the Australian Government’s high level Wik Task Force in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, providing advice to the Prime Minister on Native Title.

In previous years Mr Matthews worked in the Australian Government’s Department of Primary Industries and Energy where he was responsible for policy advice on Australia’s mining industries. He has also served in the Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce where, for seven years, he was responsible for advice on manufacturing industry policy and technology policy.

Mr Matthews has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration – Australia, a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. Mr Matthews was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001 for services to public administration. In 2005 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for services to regional communities, the national transport system and for his contribution to public administration in Australia.

Mr Matthews completed an economics degree, majoring in government in 1974 at the University of Sydney.
